Make sure the purpose for your event is important enough to merit the time and expense needed to properly stage, publicize and evaluate the event. It is best to set clear goals for your event. Carefully match the type of event that is selected to the purpose that it serves. Do you want to reach out to new customers or simply continue to touch current customers?

Ensure that the BIA team and members fully support the planned event. Select a working committee with broad representation.

Planning is an important part of your community event. Start planning at least four to six months, and in some cases, a year ahead.

Develop methods to evaluate the event's success. Measurable event objectives may include attendance, the amount of money spent at local businesses, the number of new patrons in the area or the number of repeat patrons.

Contact other BIAs that have successfully run similar events and try to learn from their experiences.
